Progression of a program with younger athletes

Ultimate Back Fitness & Performance (Fourth Edition)

There is some good info from legend Dr. Stuart McGill.

  1. First and foremost, the younger athlete needs to develop motion and motor patterns in a safe way that will ultimately lead to high-performance levels.
  2. Children are not miniature adults. Motor skills are best developed in the early years between the ages of three to nine, as observed by Piscopo and Baley, (1981) who documented the effectiveness of gross movements rather than focusing on fine motor skills.

3. Strength comes much later. The emphasis at this stage is on handling body weight and general training. Competition is limited and restricted to playful interaction.

4. Brook (1985) documented progression guidelines as the younger athletes develop further (generally ages 13-14 years for most, but not all, sports) where more specific training is incorporated as are the numbers and intensity of training sessions. Specific skill, time spent, and training intensity increase, together with strength development which becomes more focused following puberty.
